In Noosa Nor'easter, Mitchell takes his celebrated exploration of coastal culture and turns it on its head. Known for his nostalgic, stylised imaginings of the classic Australian summer, this piece shifts gears to playfully disrupt the dream of the perfect beach getaway.
A colossal bluebottle dominates the canvas, its vibrant, electric-blue tentacles draping over a sun-drenched crowd. Set against a highly graphic backdrop of retro candy-stripes—reminiscent of vintage beach towels and blistering midday sun—dozens of tiny, stylised sunbathers lounge and swim in complete, blissful ignorance of the massive marine threat looming directly above them.
With a sharp dose of dark humour and a pop-art sensibility, this work beautifully subverts our relationship with the coast. It captures that quintessential local beach anxiety, reminding us that no matter how hard we try to manicure and domesticate our coastal playgrounds, the wild, unpredictable forces of nature are always just a wave away.
