The Still Life
Workshop.

The art of looking closely.

For years, Mitch has painted still life to train his eye. Colour, composition, perspective. Apples and oranges most of all.

An art critic once said Mondrian could paint brilliant abstracts because "he could paint apples."

In this workshop, Mitch teaches you the method behind his still life series. While living in Italy, he noticed fruit there comes wrapped in beautifully printed paper. He collected the wrappers and painted a whole series of fruit on them. Now you'll do the same.

All levels welcome. The price is all inclusive, so you don't need to bring a thing. Every material is provided, and Mitch cooks lunch each day, with a glass of wine.

The Process

From fruit wrapper
to finished painting.

Mitch takes you through it one stage at a time. He demonstrates each step, then works the room with you.

01
The base layer
You lay Italian fruit wrappers across your canvas. Their colour, print and creases become the ground you paint on.

02
Drawing it up
Mitch sets up the still life and shows you how to see it. Shape, proportion, where the light falls.

03
Colour and light
Mitch shows you how to mix true colour, build shadow, and let the wrapper show through.

The finished work
Every decision is yours, so every person who comes paints something entirely their own. You take it home.

About the photos: these were taken in the artist's studio at the château in Bordeaux, where we hold our Masterclass Bordeaux. Places are now open for April 2027. When you book this Still Life Workshop, you'll join Mitch in his Noosa studio.

Where It Started

Inspired by Italy.

Mitch painted this series in Italy, on the fruit wrappers he collected there.

He first taught it at the château in Bordeaux. At the end, the group's paintings went on show together.

Your Teacher
Mitchell English
Painter, lecturer, and a teacher who explains as well as he paints

Mitch has been painting for more than 30 years. He studied at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney and holds a Masters in Design. He spent a year in Italy as studio assistant to Markus Lüpertz, then Director of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

He also lectured in Visual Arts at the University of Western Sydney. So he knows how to break a technique down until it makes sense. He reads the room, and gives each painter what they need. Some want a steady hand. Others want space. Both get it.

Experienced painters are very welcome. Mitch shares his process, but there's no rigid formula. Take it as freely as you like. He'll guide you as much or as little as you need.

Before You Book

A few things worth knowing.

Should I do the 2-day or the 4-day? +
Both teach the same method. But anyone who's spent time in a studio knows two days go quickly. The weekend still takes you from base layer to finished painting, with one-on-one time with Mitch along the way. It's a great choice if you can only get away at the weekend. If you have more flexibility, the 4-day lets you go deeper. You can refine your painting, really explore mark-making, and get even more guidance from Mitch.
Do I need any painting experience? +
No. The workshop is built for all levels — total beginners to artists with an existing practice. Mitch teaches the room individually, so you'll be met exactly where you are.
What do I need to bring? +
Nothing but clothes you don't mind getting paint on. Paints, brushes, canvas and the fruit wrappers are all provided, and lunch is taken care of every day.
Where and when is it held? +
At Mitch's studio — 2/5 Commerce Court, Noosa, QLD — from 9am to 5pm each day.
What about dietary requirements? +
Mitch cooks the group a fresh pasta lunch each day. If you have dietary requirements, mention them in the order notes or email Mitch after booking and he'll cook accordingly.
What if I book and then can't make my date? +
No stress — email Mitch at mitch@mitchellenglish.com.au as soon as you know. More Still Life dates will be released, and he'll move you to one that suits.
Can I buy a workshop as a gift? +
Absolutely — book any open date in the recipient's name, or email Mitch if you'd like the date left open for them to choose.
