The Surfer

The Surfer is an original painting by Mitchell English. Rendered in flattened planes of colour and pared-back form, the work distils a solitary figure moving through a coastal landscape into something quiet, graphic, and contemplative.

At once deceptively simple and emotionally charged, the composition uses colour and scale to evoke stillness rather than action. The figure becomes a marker of presence within the scene — a moment of pause suspended between land, sea, and horizon. The result is less a depiction of surfing than a meditation on space, solitude, and contemporary leisure.

There is a subtle art-historical resonance in the work’s compressed perspective and graphic clarity, recalling early modern approaches to landscape and figure, while remaining firmly grounded in a contemporary Australian context.

The Surfer, Acrylic on linen, float framed Tasmanian oak, 63 × 53 cm.
