As an artist, I’m usually working on multiple paintings at once, exploring ideas side by side.
Sometimes, these works are part of a series. Other times they head off in completely different directions.
For my recent solo show at HARVEY GALLERIES, it was clear that my collectors really wanted work that ventured into these new pathways.
‘August (Blue Flippers)’ was a work that definitely captured people’s imaginations. The work was pre-sold, and on opening night continued to attract interest from multiple collectors.

Trevor Harvey described the painting as having a surreal quality, and that response has stayed with me. The stacked coastal platforms, sunbathers and swimmers all feel familiar, yet slightly dreamlike, like a half-remembered holiday.
This work came out of letting things drift a little — composition, colour, subject — and being open to surprise. The strong planes of colour and exaggerated perspective allowed the story of the figures to unfold almost by themselves.
While this painting clearly shows my signature style and has echoes of my ‘Heatwave’ series, it also pushes into new territory.
Another recent work, ‘Heatwave (Gelato)’, was chased by a several collectors and confirms that these new pieces are striking a chord.

There is much more to come from my ‘Heatwave’ series — and beyond. New coastal scenes, unexpected viewpoints and more experiments with space and figure.
If you’re interested in acquiring available work or discussing a commission in this new direction, now is a great time to GET IN TOUCH and secure a piece from the next body of paintings.

My commission calendar has just opened up for the year, so feel free to REACH OUT and discuss your needs.
Cheers,
Mitch
