Evoking summer, particularly Australian summers, this work is part of a series of works that feature figures strewn across beaches, walking, lazing, generally inhabiting the sun, the sand and the sea.
The beach in Australia is a great leveller. In Mitch's paintings, the indistinct faces are guises for the everyman of thismillennium.
"I painted the figures like I did so that you don't know the class or race they are. We talk about diversity today, but there's really so much more division than was present in the 80's when I spent almost all my time on the beach.
I wanted to emphasise that the beach is one of the last bastions where everyone, whatever their class or race or gender is mixed together."
