A one-time advertising man, Mitch's messaging is often ironic rather than overtly political. In a departure from the beach, the subjects of Boat People are a tanned and oiled in-crowd lifted straight from the pages of a celebrity magazine. They recline against a calm, pale-blue sky, a bottle of fancy sparkling waterpassing between them, theword“Capri”writ large in colourful ’60s advertising font below.
“It’s a bit of a piss-take,” he says. “ ‘Boat people’ is a very strong, politically charged turn of phrase. When I think of boat people I have these very sad images of refugees in terrible situations so I just thought I’d flip it on its head. It’s political in a way, but is more a comment on how far removed you can be from reality.”
